This blog will focus on historical accuracy and reconstructionism but also on the contemporary religion and sometimes wander into other heathenry, like Anglo - Saxon faith, Odinism, Theodism and so on.
There will however never be any bigotry, homophobia, anti Semitism or stupid ideas of a “pure” Germanic race.

Forn Sed

Photo

paganroots:

The Halling (hallingdansen) is a folk dance (bygdedans) traditionally performed in rural Norway, although versions of the halling can also be found in parts of Sweden. It is the most ancient documented dance of North Europe.

The dance is traditionally performed by young men at weddings and parties. The halling is a quick (95-106 bpm) dance in 6/8 or 2/4 that includes acrobatic, athletic competition between the dancers. Hallingdans can best be described as rhythmic acrobatic dance and consists of a number of steps which requires both strength and softness elation.

Hallgrim Hansegård (Frikar) demonstrating the Halling during the annual Peer Gynt Festival at Lake Gålå

The meter of the dance is 2/4 or 6/8 of a quite fast (95-106 bpm), sharp quality which calls for an experienced musician. The musician has to give the dancers enough impetus to perform the various challenging moves that are involved in the dance such as the nakkespretten (neck jump), kruking (hooked dancing), hodestift (going over the head) and especially the kast (throw). The most known move from hallingdans worldwide is probaily the headspin. Dancers like Olav Thorshaug performed hallingdans 200 times in The United States of America around 1910-1920 including headspin in his dance. Later the break dance has made this move known to the whole world.

There is some sources, mainly from Gudbrandsdalen, who document that certain moves from the dance (especially the throwing), were used in man-to-man combat. Sources tell of a man from the area who used his agility to kick down two opponents in a skirmish. Thus, his ability to reach the hat came in handy.

Völsekvädet (Johan Sandström)

Völsi blót: The Völsi was the penis of a stallion, and the rites surrounding it are described in Völsa þáttr. It was taken from a stallion during the autumn butchering, and it is said that the mistress of the homestead considered it to be her god, and kept it in a coffin together with linen and leeks (see also horse sacrifice). In the evening everybody gathered in the main building. The mistress presented the penis from the coffin, greeted it with a prayer, and let it pass from person to person. Everybody greeted it with the religious phrase May Mörnir receive the holy sacrifice!

(I know this is an autumn blót. I just liked the music an thus posted the video).

Bysen is a woodland gnome that causes general mischief for travelers. If you see one, it will enchant your sight so that you will never see it again. It looks like a small grey man with a red cap and an axe, though it can also take the form of a tree stump. Its goal is to gradually chop down the forest, though it goes about this business slowly and tends to average about one tree per hundred years. It is also doomed to manage misplaced landmarkers between properties, though it seems to not know the correct placement of any of them. Some believe that Bysen are the spirits of deceased criminals, and this is the slow, mundane fate given to them as punishment. A Bysen can be given peace if you study its habit and move its designated landmarkers to their correct places.
